A Veteran's Hope

Rick was in the first wave of soldiers to go into Iraq in 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “Within the week, I got shot in the leg and suffered nerve damage, which is pretty painful,” he says.

He was prescribed Percocet and went on to complete his four-year hitch with an honorable discharge. When he returned home, the pain from his wound worsened. “The Percocet wasn’t enough, so I started getting heroin off the streets,” he says.

Rick turned to illegal activity to support his habit. Then his conscience began to plague him, and he moved to an isolated cabin, in hopes of changing his life. “I quit using out there in the woods,” he says. “But after I’d been off it for a while, there was a miserable emptiness inside me.”

He had a feeling it was a God-shaped hole, and began searching for programs that would help him grow closer to the Lord. “I looked all over the country and decided this would be the best place for me to learn more about Jesus, get closer with my Maker and start doing something good with my life,” Rick says.

Since entering our Christian Discipleship Program, he’s found what was missing in his life. “I can definitely feel Jesus working inside me,” he says. “When I first got here, I was really angry, but by the grace of God, I feel a lot more peace inside.”

Rick plans to complete the program, then take his future one day at a time. “I wake up every day feeling like I have a purpose, but I’ve given Jesus the steering wheel,” he says.

Because of your support, Rick, and other veterans like him, find help and hope when they walk through the doors of Great Falls Rescue Mission – at Easter and always. “The only way to a more peaceful, happy, good life is through Jesus. The Mission teaches Jesus.”
